The sweet scent of spring is in the air. For some people, this is not such a good thing. Most of us are aware that things like pollen and dander are major irritants for those with allergies. But did you know that artificial fragrances – no matter how deliciously sweet – cause problems, too.

Embracing A Scent Free Environment

Fragrance sensitivity is an issue that affects millions of people in North America. When you consider how many artificial scents we encounter on a daily basis, it’s easy to see how frustrating fragrance sensitivity can be for the many people who struggle with it.
In the dance community, it is especially important to be mindful of chemical irritants. We want the air to be filled with an atmosphere of fun and celebration – not chemicals from scented products.
With this in mind, Dance With Us Ottawa has decided to implement a Scent-Free Policy. We want everyone to enjoy their time here at the studio without having to worry about chemical irritants. Our goal is to create a scent-free environment where everyone can breathe easy knowing that the air is free of artificial fragrances.

Dance With Us Ottawa’s
Scent-Free Policy
Due to the health concerns arising from exposure to scented products, Dance With Us Ottawa has instituted this policy to provide a scent-free environment for all students, staff and visitors.

The use of scented products will not be allowed within the building at any time. In addition, all materials used for cleaning will be scent-free.

A list of locally accessible scent-free products is available from the Canadian Health and Safety office.

Fragrance Sensitivity Symptoms
Studies have shown that as much as 30 percent of the population are irritated by scented products, such as deoderant, perfume, hairspray and chemical cleaners.
You might have fragrance sensitivity and not even know it. There are a variety of symptoms related to fragrance sensitivity.
Some common symptoms include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Headaches
  • Skin rashes
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Chest congestion

People with seasonal or animal allergies are more likely to have fragrance sensitivities.  Likewise, those with asthma tend to be more sensitive to artificial scents .

If you have any of the above symptoms, and you think that fragrance sensitivity is the cause, it’s best to avoid products containing fragrance until you’ve had the chance to discuss the issue with your doctor.
