The massive success of the 2013 World Games in Cali, Colombia has proven that the spirit of ballroom dance is alive and kicking.  The Games started off with a bang, as nearly 15, 000 spectators were treated to a dazzling opening ceremony.  The show was infused with the vibrant energy Colombia is known for.

The highly anticipated Games were held on July 27th and 28th in Plaza de Tores (a.k.a “The Bullring”).  The enormous stadium came to life, as ballroom and salsa dance competitors from 120 countries lit up the brand new dance floor.

The new floor was installed after DanceSport Federation deemed the original competition floor “inappropriate” just days before the Games were set to begin.  Luckily the floor was completed just in time.   For the next two days, a bedazzling spectacle ensued.

On Saturday, Canadian couple, Alon Gilin and Anastasia Trutneva sizzled in the Latin category, placing 13th in the final ranking.

Canadian representatives, Patrick Rucinski and Ella Nusenbaum promenaded their way into the third round of the Standard competition and ranked 12th over all.

With a shiny new dance floor and a packed venue, it seemed that the rest of the competition would go on without a hitch.  Mother nature had other plans.  Rain began to pour down on the roofless stadium during the semifinals of the Standard competition.

The downpour threatened to put a damper on the much anticipated salsa finals.  In case you haven’t heard, Colombians are serious about salsa, so this could have been disastrous.

Luckily, the rain subsided just in time for Colombia’s beloved salsa heroes to take to the floor.  They didn’t disappoint.  Colombian couple, Benjumea Merolanda Jefferson Andres and Avila Molina Adriana, won gold.  The crowd, which by that point had swelled to about 18,000 people, went wild.
